The vision is to have our building purchased and first floor renovated; enabling us to house our after school program which seeks to build lasting relationships in an environment saturated with the gospel, strong academic excellence, critical life skills, and needed resources; empowering them to grow into strong contributing members of society, impacting eternity.
And this is just the beginning...
And this is just the beginning...
3:00-6:00 p.m. is the most dangerous
part of the day for juvenile crime.
After schools lets out, many kids are left unattended until parents, fighting
to provide for their families, come home from work.part of the day for juvenile crime.
• Florida has one of the lowest graduation rates in the Nation.
Dropouts are more than three times as likely to be arrested and
eight timesas likely to be in prison than high school graduates.
• The Florida Times-Union found that more than 60% of Jacksonville’s
accused murderers did not finish high school and one out of seven failed
to reach 9th grade.1
• Three of the four closest schools that serve in the 2nd Mile target community, Brentwood, receieved a grade of a D or an F in 2009.
• Economists estimate that child poverty costs the U.S. $500 billion a
year in lost productivity in the work force and spending on health
care and the criminal justice system.2
The hopelessness that is before our community is overwhelming.
2nd Mile Ministries has been serving in the Brentwood community for 8 years.
The ministry has been building partnerships with other organizations and community leaders.
Over the past two years, 2nd Mile has focused more on elementary
aged children in the community by volunteering in the schools, leading a summer day camp, and hosting community events.
But more is needed to be done.
The children in this community need help to go the extra mile. Schools need partnerships to go the extra mile. Families need support that will go the extra mile.

A community center focused on underprivileged and under-resourced youth is
desperately needed to come along side our schools, families, and
neighborhoods. The Brentwood community needs 2nd Mile now!
We wholeheartedly believe that now is the time to build this community center.
The first initiative the 2nd Mile Community Center will house is an
after-school program that began September 2011.
“Well designed, inviting after school programs provide a safe place for youth to play, study and learn until their parents or caregivers return home from work.”1
Our two:fiftytwo after school program will do much more than that.
Starting with grades 2nd-4th, we will add a grade level each year - following the students up through High School. The center will continue to offer resources
and support through College, and into their Career.
This program will enable us to build rich relationships in an environment
saturated with the gospel, strong academic excellence, critical life skills, and
much needed resources; empowering them to grow into strong contributing members of society impacting eternity.
Children in the program will be given the tools, resources, relationships, and opportunities they need to grow and succeed, as well as be apart of God’s plan
to strengthen and transform the commmunity they live in.
The after-school program began September 2011. The program is being held in a temporary location until the first phase of renovation of the building is completed.

In a community where only 1 out of 9 households own a car, location is
essential. 2nd Mile must be accessible to their community to be effective.
As the staff of 2nd Mile has driven the streets of the community and researched many options, this property emerged as the ideal location.
The 2nd Mile Community Center, 4003 North Pearl Street, is located in the heart
of the ministry’s target community. Pearl Street is the main thoroughfare of the neighborhood.
This building is within easy distance of:
(roll mouse over location name to see on map)
• Brentwood Elementary School
• Andrew Robinson Elementary
• North Shore Elementary K-8 School
• Andrew Jackson High School
• Brentwood Park (location of 2nd Mile outreach events like the
Family Fall Festival and Challenge Circle Super Bowl)
The location and resources provided by this building result in a great investment.

• Why the name "Nehemiah Project"?
There are often times in life like in the times of Nehemiah where you know that its the time to build. A time to build an actual building that will enable you to build into individuals lives, but also the community. Nehemiah was a man who felt amazing oppostion as he moved forward to what God had in store for them. We recognize that the Challenges ahead will be great, but we serve a God that makes the impossible possible. so like the people of Nehemiah's day this is a call for the people of God to build.
Nehemiah 2:18b “Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
• Why are you renovating versus building new?
With only 1 of 9 households in our community owning a car the location of
our building is one of our largest considerations. After looking for
several years for a feasible space God is opening up the opportunity to
procure an ideally sized building directly in the center of our target
neighborhood allowing us to be easily accessible to hundreds of families.
Not only will we be within walking distance from hundreds of neighborhood
homes, the building is also situated near several of our partnering
neighborhood schools and parks.
• Why does it seem like it costs so much money? Can it be done more cheaply?
It is true that this project will cost a lot of money - however, we plan to
build and outfit the ministry center to last. The money we raise will allow
us to purchase the land, and two buildings. It will also allow us to
completely renovate nearly 9,000 square feet of space with new HVAC,
plumbing, electrical, a great kitchen, locker rooms/bathrooms, etc. We will
also be able to outfit the center will all the required tables, chairs,
computers, etc. This center will provide valuable resources for a
historically under-resourced community. We will do everything in our power
to steward our resources wisely, looking for the best deals and welcoming
volunteer labor, etc, however, we seek to be realistic and prepared to cover
the entire cost of the project.
• What does the cost cover?
The money we raise will allow us to purchase the land, and two buildings.
It will also allow us to completely renovate nearly 9,000 square feet of
space with new HVAC, plumbing, electrical, a great kitchen, lots of class
rooms, locker rooms/bathrooms, etc. We will also be able to outfit the
center will all the required tables, chairs, computers, kitchen utensils,
etc.
• How soon are you hoping to occupy it?
We hope to occupy the building "yesterday". We are borrowing space for our
after school program (in a building that is far from ideal) until we are
able to occupy our building.
• If you are hoping to occupy it so soon what is happening for the rest of
the 3 years of the campaign?
We will seek to do all of the infrastructure work up front. That will be
followed by completing the first floor (allowing us to occupy the building
for the after school program). Finally we will finish the second floor of
the building. It is our goal to be completely wrapped up with construction
and outfitting both floors before the 3 years is up.
• Are you taking a loan to help build?
We will NOT be taking out any loans for this project. We will pay
everything upfront with cash as we go. This makes it imperative to have the
cash-in-hand as soon as possible.
• Why are you starting an after school program?
There are many reasons we are starting an after school program. The most
central reason for starting an after school program is that it will allow
avenues for us to live, speak, and see the gospel formed in the lives of
many in our community. See the Need page for more details regarding the
startling need. Check out the two:fiftytwo program page to read more about the program vision.
