Our Story
Who we are
2nd Mile Ministries is a non-profit 501c3 Christian community development organization that is focused on serving and loving the Brentwood Community through ministries of relief, transformation, and social reform.
2nd Mile Ministries derives it name from Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus is teaching the crowd on personal relationships. In Matthew 5:41-42, “And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.”
Mission: To impact at-risk neighborhoods through ministries of relief, transformation, and social reform.
Vision: To help transform the city of Jacksonville through Christian community development and strategic ministry partnerships.
Purpose: To live out God's kingdom on earth by empowering individuals, and promoting justice and reconciliation.
Why we exist
Our desire is to help the community have a more accurate picture of Jesus. Believing that God is reaching out not only to save and rescue mankind, but is also concerned about their physical and mental well-being, a picture that portrays the hurts, concerns, and injustices of the community.
In 2003, 2nd Mile began investing and building relationships in the Brentwood community. A strategic plan was put into place as several individuals moved into the neighbor“hood”. They began by teaching and tutoring in the public schools, attending community meetings, bringing water and playing basketball in the local park. Soon after that a youth Bible study was started in one of the homes in the neighborhood.
Now eight years later, many students have graduated from high school. The neighborhood bible study had an attendance of 50-plus members; over 100 kids have gone to summer camp in Branson, Missouri, and in the past three years over 200 elementary students participated in our summer day camp. Strategic partnerships developed as interns served daily in two of our elementary schools and hundreds from across the country have participated in our weeklong Urban Exchange Program. Further, over twenty young collegiate have participated in our summer and yearlong Intern Program.
